Johns bros overcome McGuffin. Martinez Vich in five-game epic
LOS ANGELES, CA - For the first time in 2024, a match on Championship Sunday went to five games.
And it did not disappoint.
Ben and Collin Johns bested No. 4 seeds Tyson McGuffin and Jaume Martinez Vich 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11 11-6 in a battle that lasted over two hours.
The explosiveness of McGuffin and Martinez Vich was on full display throughout the match, as the two showcased expertly timed attacks to disrupt the rhythm of their opponents in the middle of long dink rallies.
In the end, though, it was the resilience and patience of the brothers that allowed the top seeds to pull ahead in Game 5 and eventually close the match out.
This is the 31st PPA title for the Johns brothers, and each one reminds C. Johns of the opportunity that pickleball has given him.
“It’s always special to play on the center court and win a title, but to do it with your younger brother is even better,” he said. “I never thought I’d be in this position, so it’s very cool.”
This gold gives C. Johns his second medal of the day after picking up a bronze in mixed doubles with Tina Pisnik on Sunday morning.
